Starry-eyed Nostalgia
In this piece, I capture the feeling of nostalgia in the form of a roaming fish.
The felted body of the fish brings a soft and opaque blurriness that resembles the fogged line between our memory and reality. The body's structure mimics a Christmas tree, as nostalgia for me has long been the Christmases Mom and I had in Buffalo. With pastel tones, I illustrate what Christmas was like for me as a child - magical, fantastical - and with each tier's rounded edges and star-like shape, I reinforce a sense of naiveness and child-like innocence. The resin eyes encase star sequins, symbolic of our “starry-eyed” attitude toward the past, as we seemingly glorify and yearn for the moments we have lost.
